Forty five miles of I-90

Hardin is the seat of Big Horn County, home to 3,818 people at the 2020 census, and Interstate 90 runs along the north side of town. Between Hardin and Billings the interstate carries grain and beet trucks, cattle trailers and long-haul freight, and in winter it gets the same crushed-gravel traction sand the Montana Department of Transportation spreads across the state. At 80 mph, any of that can leave a star break in your windshield.

Local roads add their share. Old US-87 serves as a frontage road, and secondary highways 216, 236, 307, 313 and 384 fan out into farm and ranch country, much of it on gravel. Following a truck on gravel at any speed is the quickest way to collect a long crack.

Why do windshield chips spread so fast around Hardin?

Because the temperature range is extreme. Hardin has a cold semi-arid climate with records from -47°F to 112°F, and glass expands and shrinks with every swing. A chip concentrates that stress. A hot defroster on a frozen windshield, or cold air conditioning on glass baking in July sun, is often all it takes to send a crack across the glass.

If you pick up a chip, cover it with clear tape to keep out water and grit, run the defroster or air conditioning gently, and avoid parking with the glass facing full sun. Resin repair works best on a fresh, clean chip under 1 inch. Our windshield chip and crack repair page explains which damage qualifies.

Harvest season glass: wheat, sugar beets and county roads

Farming shaped Hardin. A sugar beet plant opened here in 1937, and Thomas D. Campbell once ran a 95,000-acre wheat farm nearby, known for pioneering big farm machinery. Wheat and beets are still part of the area, and harvest brings heavy truck traffic on county roads and I-90.

That work is hard on more than windshields. We replace pickup back glass broken by cargo in the bed, manual and power sliding rear windows, door glass, and cab glass for tractors and combines. For equipment, call with the make, model and panel so we can price it and tell you whether to bring the machine or the door.

Summer visitors and RVs on I-90

South of Hardin, I-90 passes Crow Agency and the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and the Bighorn River draws anglers and campers through the area. Summer brings motor homes and trailers that pick up the same rock chips as everyone else.

Motor home glass is one of our shop's specialties. Class C units often share windshields with the van or truck chassis underneath, while Class A coaches use large windshields that are usually special order. If you are traveling, call us before driving to Billings so we can check stock; see our RV windshield replacement page for more.

Fleet and work vehicles from the industrial park

Hardin has an 800-acre industrial park, and the businesses there run pickups, service vans and trucks that spend their days on I-90 and county roads. Fleet glass works the same as a private car: OEM or OEM-equivalent laminated windshields, calibration where the vehicle needs it, and invoices that match your purchase order.

For fleets, we can schedule two or three vehicles back to back so a crew is not missing a truck for a whole day. Call ahead with the VINs and we will check stock for each one before you send them west on I-90.

Crow Agency, Lodge Grass and the rest of Big Horn County

Many of our Big Horn County customers live south of Hardin along I-90, in Crow Agency, Lodge Grass and the ranch country between. From there, Billings is an hour or more away, so planning matters. Send photos of the damage before you leave and we will tell you whether it is a quick resin repair or a full replacement, and how long you will be at the shop.

A replacement windshield takes about two hours, and the urethane has to reach its minimum drive-away time before you leave. That time is set by the adhesive maker and runs longer in cold weather, which is one more reason to book a morning slot in winter. You will leave with the safe drive-away time in writing and a short list of what to avoid for the first day, such as car washes and slamming doors.

FAQ

Hardin windshield FAQ

How far is your shop from Hardin?

Our shop is in downtown Billings, about 45 miles west of Hardin on I-90. Most drivers make it in 45 to 50 minutes. We are open Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, and all work is done at the shop.

Can I get my windshield replaced the same day?

Usually, if the glass for your vehicle is in stock. Call in the morning with your VIN and we will confirm the part and hold a slot. The replacement takes about two hours, plus 30 to 60 minutes if the camera needs calibration.

Does insurance pay for windshield replacement in Big Horn County?

If you have comprehensive coverage, a windshield damaged by rocks or hail is usually paid after your deductible, and chip repair is often covered with no deductible. Coverage depends on your policy. We help you start the claim from the shop.

Why did my chip turn into a crack overnight?

A sharp temperature change is the usual cause. Hardin swings from deep winter cold to summer heat, and a hot defroster on frozen glass or a cold blast on sun-baked glass puts stress right at the chip. Repairing chips early stops most of these cracks.

Do you fix motor home windshields?

Yes. Motor home and RV glass is a specialty of our shop. Class A windshields are often special order, so call first with the coach maker, model year and chassis, and we will quote the glass and the lead time.
